Breast deformities

There is a malformation when the shape of one or both breasts is abnormal. Malformations are fairly common, with the most well-known being :

  • tuberous breasts characterised by a narrow and higher than normal breast fold, and enlarged areolas. Breasts are often small ;

  • Poland syndrome where the breast develops very little or not at all. This syndrome may include other abnormalities; agenesis of the pectoral (lack of pectoral muscle) and, sometimes, deformities of the hand on the same side.

These deformities are congenital but not hereditary (something definitely happened during the development of the foetus, but is not written in the genes; the children of patients with this type of deformity will not have defects themselves).

Teenagers are often terribly embarrassed and do not dare to talk to their parents about these things. Psychologically it is important to provide early care, so that the teenagers do not develop a complex about it.
