Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy can be performed at the same time as the removal of the breast, this is called immediate reconstruction or in a second time, a few months after the end of the treatments, it is a delayed (or secondary) reconstruction.

Reconstruction after a mastectomy
It is always possible to reconstruct the breast in case of a mastectomy. The Paris Breast Center can use any technique of breast reconstruction, immediate or delayed, to provide the best solution to the patient.
Reconstruction after a conservative treatment
Conservative treatment can cause asymmetry and sometimes deform the breast. The Paris Breast Center was a pioneer and remains an international leader for breast reconstruction after conservative treatment.

All about breast reconstruction
In a mastectomy, the surgeon removes the entire breast gland, but may keep a significant amount of breast skin. For some cancers and in the case of prophylactic mastectomy, the areola and nipple may even be preserved. The primary goal of reconstruction is to restore the volume of the breast. This involves two types of techniques:
- Prostheses (silicone gel or expansion prostheses).
- Autologous techniques (without foreign body, with your own tissues): these are the flaps and fillings.
The different reconstruction techniques (prosthesis, flap, lipofilling) can be used and combined, both for immediate and delayed breast reconstruction.
Immediate or delayed reconstruction?
Immediate reconstruction
In all cases where a mastectomy is proposed, immediate reconstruction can be considered: there are few contraindications to immediate breast reconstruction.
At the Paris Breast Center, immediate reconstruction is systematically considered. The surgical procedure being a little longer and more complicated than a simple mastectomy, the indications are discussed with you on a case-by-case basis according to the characteristics of your cancer, the treatments considered, your morphology and your needs.
Delayed Reconstruction
It is still possible to reconstruct your breast, even years after removal.
Reconstruction can begin between 3 months and 1 year after the end of treatment, depending on the type of treatment received, and the characteristics of the reconstruction, in particular a radiotherapy delays reconstruction by several months.
