Reconstruction by prosthesis

Reconstructions by prostheses do not vary in volume with weight changes, whereas the contralateral breast may increase or decrease in volume. Asymmetry may therefore appear or increase in the event of weight gain or loss.

The contralateral breast may also tend to sag over time or after pregnancy or breastfeeding, whereas the breast reconstructed with a prosthesis will not move. Sometimes a shell may appear or grow around the prosthesis. In this case, the reconstructed breast will appear higher than the other. The prosthesis may rupture and need to be replaced.

All of these situations can lead to re-operations, most often quite simple and on an outpatient basis.

Reconstruction with free flaps

Autologous reconstructions generally do not require touch-ups over time and follow weight changes.

Tattoos

The areola tattoo may fade over the years. It is very easy to do an additional tattoo if necessary.
