Gynecomastia is an abnormal growth of one or both breasts in men. It can appear in adolescence or later. It is often a source of anxiety. This procedure is covered by the French Health Insurance.

What causes gynecomastia?
A medical check-up is systematically performed to look for a hormonal or medicinal reason, but no cause is found in the majority of cases.
A surgical treatment
The goal of the procedure is to restore a “normal” anatomy :
- Extracting the fat by liposuction
- By removing the excess of breast gland
- If necessary, readjusting the excess of skin
Characteristics of the procedure to treat gynecomastia
- The procedure is done under general anesthesia and lasts between 1 and 2 hours, on an outpatient basis
- The procedure is little to not painful
- Requires between 2 and 8 days off work
Scars after a gynecomastia surgery
- In the case of a fatty gynecomastia with little skin excess, liposuction is sufficient. There is therefore no visible scar
- In the case of significant skin excess, scars may be visible: they are as discreet as possible
Possible complications after gynecomastia surgery
Post-operative complications
- Complications related to scarring are more likely in smokers. It is advised to stop smoking 1 month before and after the operation
- Serous effusions: they can be punctured during a consultation if they are large enough
Late complications
- Sensory disorders with a sensitivity decrease of the operated area
- Recurrence of gynecomastia
- Unsightly scars: hypertrophic or keloid
