The team I’m training with at the Institut du Sein is highly recognized and internationally renowned team They present internationally as key speakers at conferences and so that’s one of the reasons why I approached the team to see whether I could come and train as a formalized fellowship with them.

There’s a lot of collegial networking. They talk amongst themselves and learn from their techniques and learn from each other.

If I could I would love to stay for longer. Because I believe that there is a lot of things I could learn from the team and it’s just a pity that I could only come for six months.

I find that the breast units here uses a lot of composite approaches and what I mean by that is for example, a breast reduction. In Australia you might just do like a surgical reduction with Superomedial Pedicle Wise-Pattern excision but here they do liposuction to shape the breast laterally immediately. They do lipofilling or like augmentation to increase the supero pole. It’s a way of thinking that I haven’t been taught which is very important. I think I would definitely take back and utilize it in my practice in Australia.

I have been married for about 10 years and I have a six-year-old daughter, her name’s Chloe and an 18 month old son called Hugo. All both French names. Unfortunately, they’ve had to stay back in Australia. So I’ve just come to France by myself because it was too hard to relocate them for my training.

But I think the sacrifice is worth it. I have learnt a lot that I can take back and utilize in practice. My ideal scenario when I go back to Australia would be that I would become not only a competent breast surgeon but one that is I guess… I wouldn’t strive to be the best in the field but like a really good breast surgeon I would say. And one that does a bit of research to help improve the practice. Always think laterally, pushing the boundaries which is what the unit does here. They push the boundaries a lot but importantly in a safe and ethical manner and the other thing is what I’ve learnt here is mentoring. I really want to be a good surgical mentor. I feel like in Australia that’s what we lack in the culture. Here I’ve found that the team has been great mentors. They teach me, they talk through the mental thought process even without me noticing that a discussion is made all the time about what aspects of the surgery I can learn from.

Australia there’s a lot of things I want to do that I’ve learnt here. For example, the multi-full approaches that I mentioned before like surgery, liposuction, lipofilling, like reconstruction but also for me other things like oncoplastic level one like breast tissue remodeling.
