What is a breast reduction?
A breast reduction surgery reduces the volume of the breasts, lifts them and gives them a harmonious shape. It is a simple and painless procedure. The procedure does not interfere with breast cancer screening and breastfeeding is often possible.
Modalities of the operation for a breast reduction
- The operation lasts between 1h30 and 2h30.
- The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, on an outpatient basis or with an overnight hospital stay.
- The procedure is not painful, it requires 3 to 15 days off work.
- The dressings are kept for two weeks.
- Wearing a sports bra is recommended for 3 weeks.
- Social security covers the procedure if the reduction is greater than 300 grams per breast.
Scars after a breast reduction
The number and length of scars depend on the amount of excess skin. The quality of the scars depends essentially on the way each one heals. The surgeon’s goal is to control the shape and volume of the breast by minimizing the length of the scars.

Possible complications after a breast reduction surgery
They are mainly related to healing problems.
Postoperative complications
- Necrosis of a part of the areola or a part of the gland.
- Disunity of a scar or infection.
- These complications cause a delay in healing, but do not usually change the shape of the breast.
- These complications are favored by smoking. It is recommended to stop smoking 1 month before and after the operation.
Late complications
- Unsightly, hypertrophic or keloid scars (photo 4). There are techniques that can be used to touch up scars to improve them.
- Asymmetry, which may justify a surgical touch-up.
- Decrease or loss of sensitivity of the areola and nipple.
